Search Cottonwood County Released Inmates

Cottonwood County released inmates require a different search from people who remain in jail. A name often leaves the live roster after custody changes, while the release record stays with the office that created it. To search for Cottonwood County released inmates, first identify whether the person left the county jail, entered state prison, moved to another custodian, or began supervision. Cottonwood County released inmates may then appear in corrections, court, notification, or agency records. The right search path connects those sources without treating a missing roster name as proof of community release.

Cottonwood Released Inmate Meaning

A release from Cottonwood County Jail is a physical custody event with a date, time, and legal basis. It can send a person back to the community, but that is only one outcome. The Sheriff may instead transfer custody to another jail, the Minnesota Department of Corrections, a federal agency, or immigration authorities. A court order may explain why a release was authorized. Minnesota VINE may signal that the event happened. The Sheriff’s own release or transfer entry is still the best local proof of what physically occurred.

The distinction matters because Cottonwood County publishes a current roster, not a historical release database. Its PDF shows people held at the time of the snapshot. Once a record drops from that current view, the former row does not become a public release result. A disappearance may follow release, transfer, a record correction, or a purge. It may also reflect a name mismatch. Confirm the event through the source that recorded the custody transaction.

Important: Absence from the Cottonwood roster is only a clue. It does not establish when, why, or to whom custody changed.

Cottonwood County Release Routes

Several records can use similar words for very different outcomes. Keep the exact agency term attached to the event. Bond release means the local custody basis ended after required conditions were met, while the case may remain open. A court-ordered release reflects judicial authority, but the jail record supplies the actual processing time. Completion of a local term or credit for time served can end jail custody. Probation is a court-based community sentence. Minnesota supervised release follows state prison and normally continues DOC control in the community.

VINE also distinguishes release, bond release, court-ordered release, unsupervised custody, transfer, record purge, escape, and death. “Unsupervised custody” can include work release or electronic home monitoring. Escape is not a lawful release. Death is a separate custody event and should never be described as an ordinary release.

Discharge
The end of the relevant agency’s custody or jurisdiction, depending on the record.
Detainer
A request or authority that may keep a person held or move that person to another custodian.
Time served
A sentence outcome crediting custody already completed toward the ordered jail term.
Expungement
A legal process that seals qualifying records from ordinary public view without rewriting the historic event.

Cottonwood Release Record Fields

The current Cottonwood roster displays an inmate name, charges, the agency or basis listed under “Held For,” booking date, projected release, and bail amount. Those fields describe a current booking. They do not supply an actual release time, release reason, receiving agency, released status, or booking photograph. A complete inquiry therefore asks for the existing Sheriff data tied to the booking rather than relying on the live PDF alone.

Requested fieldWhat it establishes
Name and booking numberWhich custody record is being matched
Booking date and timeWhen the listed jail episode began
Actual release date and timeWhen Cottonwood custody ended
Legal basisWhy release or transfer was authorized
Transfer recipientWhich agency received custody
Booking photographThe releasable image associated with that booking
Incident or court fileA link to the originating event or judicial case

Supervision data may sit elsewhere. A misdemeanor probation record belongs with the local court and probation office. A state prison case may show an MNDOC ID, current status, anticipated release date, expiration date, supervising unit, and agent. No single public document is guaranteed to preserve the full chain from arrest through final discharge.

Request Cottonwood Release Records

Minnesota Statutes section 13.82 makes the adult release date, time, and legal basis public at the originating law-enforcement agency. It also makes the date, time, legal basis, and receiving agency for a transfer public. A focused request reduces identity mistakes and avoids asking staff to create a report that the county does not maintain.

  1. Identify the person with a full name, date of birth when known, booking number, and an approximate booking date.
  2. Ask for the actual release date, release time, legal basis, or the corresponding transfer fields and receiving agency.
  3. Request the existing booking sheet, custody-release or transfer entry, and releasable booking photograph.
  4. Prefer electronic delivery. Ask for an advance cost estimate and the legal citation for any withheld part.
  5. Compare the response with VINE and the court case, while preserving each source’s exact wording.

The Sheriff FAQ directs records visitors to the lobby front window. Dispatch is available continuously, but that does not mean records requests are processed around the clock. Cottonwood publishes no promised turnaround for a release request. The FAQ also contains inconsistent staff naming, so use the published records email and ask the office to identify the current responsible authority.

Inspection is free under section 13.03. Up to one hundred black-and-white letter or legal pages may cost no more than twenty-five cents per page. Other copies may carry actual reproduction or transmission costs. Cottonwood’s fee schedule lists twenty-five dollars for USB media and postage for a digital recording or photograph, but that listing does not prove the same charge applies to one image sent by email. Confirm the cost first.

Cottonwood Jail Capacity Context

Cottonwood County Jail is the only adult detention facility identified within the county during the official facility sweep. A statewide regional jail study lists approved capacity of twenty-one and operational capacity of 16.8. It forecasts average daily population of 11.5 in 2029 and 13.8 in 2049. These numbers concern space and projected demand. They are not release totals, current headcounts, or evidence that any named person left custody.

Capacity figures can help explain the local detention setting, yet they do not change the proof standard for a release. The named Sheriff record remains the key source.

Cottonwood Release Facility History

The jail’s physical setting has a documented history. A 2020 state inspection described undersized intake space, a multipurpose holding cell, limited program and health-care space, and no active recreation because of physical constraints. A 2024 inspection identified corrective items involving weekly fire and safety checks, formal counts, medical screening, and prescription records.

Neither inspection says that a new jail has been approved or built. They also do not identify a public release door, routine discharge hour, waiting area, transportation service, gate payment, or property-return schedule. Those logistics remain direct questions for Jail Administration. The Sheriff FAQ’s front-window instruction identifies public access to the office, not the door used for releases.

Find Cottonwood Released Inmates

Start by fixing identity. Gather a full name, aliases, birth date, booking or facility ID, MNDOC ID, court file number, and approximate dates when available. The same name can appear differently in the county PDF, VINE, court records, DOC, BOP, and ICE systems. Unique identifiers and dates protect against a false match.

  1. Check the Cottonwood current PDF. Presence supports county custody only as of the generated snapshot. Absence proves little.
  2. Search Minnesota VINE by full or partial name or facility ID. Read release, transfer, purge, and unsupervised-custody events literally.
  3. Ask the Sheriff whether the person remains in county custody and request the actual release or transfer fields.
  4. Search Minnesota Court Records Online by name, then use Cottonwood and criminal filters. Try a case or citation number if remote name search is limited.
  5. If Cottonwood transferred the person to MNDOC, search the six-digit DOC ID or name and read current status separately from anticipated and expiration dates.
  6. Use the BOP or ICE locator only when federal or immigration custody is plausible. Their results describe their own custody scope.
  7. When a public locator lacks history, request the record from the agency that held it.

The county publishes no official rolling release feed. For a time-based view, the Cottonwood County 24-hour release process explains how to request existing events without turning roster changes into an invented list. A named-person request is often more precise than asking the Sheriff to create a new compilation.

Cottonwood Release Roster Limits

The Cottonwood jail roster landing page shows the county’s cadence and accuracy warning.

Cottonwood County released inmate roster cadence and disclaimer
Cottonwood publishes a current roster link and warns that the information may not be complete or current.

The PDF is regenerated at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Central. An event after the morning run may not appear until evening. An event after the evening run may wait until the next file. The live link is overwritten, and no post-release retention period is published. Comparing one saved snapshot with another may identify a change, but it cannot provide the actual event time or legal basis.

Question: Does a future “Projected Release” date mean release was approved? No. It is a prospective county field. Bail, a court order, other holds, and processing can still change what occurs.

Cottonwood Release Court Boundary

Cottonwood’s own roster disclaimer directs pending legal questions to Minnesota courts. That instruction draws a useful boundary. Jail data establishes physical custody, while court data records the case and judicial action. A bond order, dismissal, sentence, stayed term, probation order, warrant, or prison commitment can explain the legal setting. It does not replace the Sheriff entry showing when the person actually left.

Minnesota Court Records Online offers Case Search, Document Search, Hearing Search, and Judgment Search. Name searches can be narrowed to criminal matters and Cottonwood County. Pending criminal defendants generally cannot be found by remote defendant-name search until conviction, and dismissed or continued-for-dismissal matters share that limit. Try the case or citation number, wildcard or “Sounds Like,” attorney search, or Cottonwood Court Administration. Older and otherwise public material may require courthouse access.

Question: If MCRO shows bond, was the person released? Not necessarily. Posting, condition checks, other holds, and jail processing can follow the court order. Pair the case with the completed custody event.

Cottonwood Release to ICE

A Cottonwood jail discharge can hand custody to ICE rather than return someone to the community. First request the county transfer date, legal basis, and receiving agency. Then use the ICE Online Detainee Locator with a nine-digit A-number and country of birth or exact biographical details. Add a leading zero to a short A-number and preserve surname hyphens.

ICE says the locator covers people in current custody and those released from ICE custody within the preceding sixty days. Minors do not appear, and processing or security limits can delay or suppress a record. One official Cottonwood incident account describes county staff notifying ICE after bail was posted. It illustrates that bail, local processing, and federal pickup are separate events. It does not prove a standing county contract or a universal process.

The official ICE scope page explains the current and recently released window.

ICE silence outside its short window cannot establish that no immigration custody occurred.

Cottonwood Release Status Channels

Minnesota uses separate notification systems. VINE covers county jails, including Cottonwood. Search by full or partial name or facility ID, and read each event label carefully. County data typically reach VINE every fifteen or thirty minutes, but transmission is not guaranteed. Register while the county record is active if a release or transfer alert is needed. For a state prison case, use MNDOC’s HAVEN program rather than treating VINE as the DOC notification service.

Post-release supervision also splits locally. Cottonwood County Probation handles juvenile, adult misdemeanor, and adult gross-misdemeanor matters. The DOC Felony Office in Windom handles adult felony, enhanced-felony, and sex-offender supervision. Neither office provides a public name database. Begin with the sentencing record and route the question to the correct office. Cottonwood post-release supervision follows that local division.

Federal results have their own limits. The BOP locator can show “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” with a date. That confirms departure from BOP custody only. Another justice system or federal supervision may continue. “In Transit” is not release, and Community Corrections Management can reflect continuing BOP-associated custody.

Cottonwood Release Record Sealing

Minnesota combines petition-based and automatic expungement. Section 609A.015 covers automatic sealing for qualifying resolutions and convictions subject to its conditions. Chapter 609A also provides petition routes with offense, history, and waiting-period rules. The Judicial Branch notes that implementation follows the legal process rather than happening the instant a petition is granted.

Sealing can explain why an older court case or image no longer appears to the public. It does not prove that custody never occurred. Government records may remain lawfully held with nonpublic access. Likewise, the Cottonwood roster’s overwritten PDF is not a stated retention policy. Ask the Sheriff or DOC for the existing underlying record, and allow that agency to apply the governing classification or order.

Cottonwood Release Source Comparison

Choose the system by the custody question it can answer. Each status is limited to the agency that issued it.

SourceBest useImportant limit
Cottonwood rosterCurrent county custody at the snapshotNo release history or actual release field
Sheriff release recordActual county release or transfer eventMust be requested when not online
VINECounty jail status alertsOperational notice, not a durable archive
MCROCourt disposition and sentence contextUsually no exact physical release time
MNDOC Public ViewerState custody or continuing supervisionNot a permanent discharged-person archive
BOP locatorFederal BOP custody and release dateDoes not resolve other custody or supervision
ICE locatorCurrent or recently ended ICE custodyLimited window and possible omissions

For every system, record the source and retrieval time. Do not blend update schedules into one supposedly live result. A fact such as “the name was absent from the evening PDF” is sound. A claim that the person was released at the file generation time is not.

Cottonwood Release Facility

The Cottonwood County Jail at the Law Enforcement Center is the only adult detention facility officially identified within Cottonwood County. It is operated by the Sheriff. A person may leave for the community, another jail, MNDOC, ICE, or another authorized custodian depending on the legal basis. Use Sheriff release data for a community release and the named receiving system for a transfer.

  • Cottonwood County Jail: 902 5th Avenue, Windom, Minnesota 56101.
  • Information line: 507-831-1375.
  • Public records access: Sheriff lobby front window, records email, mail, telephone, or fax.
  • Release proof: actual date, time, and legal basis from the Sheriff’s existing data.

Official sources found no separate municipal jail, regional jail, state prison, federal prison, or ICE detention center physically located in the county. That does not mean Cottonwood detainees never move elsewhere. The transfer recipient is the bridge to the next search.
